HELPING HORSES ACROSS CANADA WHEN THEY NEED IT MOST
Horse Rescue Fund is a Canada-wide, fully registered not-for-profit foundation dedicated to helping equines in need — by providing grants to reputable rescues, sanctuaries, and individuals.
With your help, we support equines across Canada when caregivers face temporary or unexpected challenges such as illness, loss of income, death in the family, or natural disasters.
Sometimes, all it takes to keep a horse healthy and safe is a little help — a load of hay, assistance with a vet bill, or support covering the cost of humane euthanasia -- when there’s no other option.
One of our goals is to prevent beloved horses from suffering, being sold or surrendered -- just because someone fell on hard times.
When disaster strikes — wildfires, floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, or other emergencies — we also help fund the evacuation, feeding, and sheltering of horses until it’s safe for them to go home. Once it is, we can help with transportation costs, replacement hay, or repairs to fencing and shelter.
Every dollar donated helps give a horse or other equine the chance to stay safe, cared for, and loved.
Together, we can make sure no horse slips through the cracks.
Because we are registered with the Canada Revenue Agency, we can provide official tax receipts for donations.
50/50 JACKPOT RAFFLES
We’re a Canada-wide fully registered foundation (charity), but this raffle is open to residents 18+ in Alberta. It is fully licensed by the province.
The winner takes 50% of total ticket sales, and the proceeds we receive stay in the province to help horses in need.
We’ll be running 50/50 raffles in BC, Ontario, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia soon, so stay tuned!
Ticket sales are online - they start at just $10 - you do NOT need to be present to win!

XENA NEEDS TWO SURGERIES
You may have been following a situation in Ontario, Canada where 16 horses were seized by Animal Welfare Services and a variety of neglect charges (and unrelated criminal charges) were filed against Stephanie Redlick who then tried to rebrand herself as a rescue and equine therapist under the name of Above the Stars Equine Rescue – even falsely claiming to be a registered charity. Above the Stars Equine Rescue is a scam.
Before the seizure of 16 horses by Animal Welfare Services and neglect charges, four other horses were quietly surrendered by Redlick to a compassionate local family.
Tragically, one of those four horses, Seattle Sunrise had to be euthanized—despite every effort, and significant expense, to save him.
Another, Xena, a gentle 2-year-old Percheron cross, urgently needed a specialist dental extraction, which ended up being over $3,000. (A BIG THANK YOU to all who contributed.)
Sadly Xena also needs a hernia repair surgery which we are now (November 2025) fund raising for.
Every dollar helps. If you’re in a position to give, please consider donating today. Together, we can keep showing up for horses like Xena. [Learn more…]
A FEW OF THE ORGANIZATIONS & EMERGENCY SITUATIONS
YOUR GENEROUS CONTRIBUTIONS HAVE HELPED
HURRICANE FIONA
Hurricane Fiona was a large, powerful, and destructive Category 4 Atlantic hurricane which was the costliest and most intense tropical or post-tropical cyclone on record to hit Canada.
Early on September 24, 2022, Fiona struck Nova Scotia with sustained winds of 100 mph (155 km/h). Prince Edward Island and parts of New Brunswick and Quebec were also negatively impacted.
Sadly, we didn’t have nearly enough in our emergency fund when the storm hit but… [Learn more.]
EYE SURGERY
This mare was just moments away from being picked up by someone who is notorious for buying cheap horses and not providing what most would consider adequate care — when a compassionate individual stepped in, bought her and changed her fate.
Though otherwise healthy, she was in urgent need of eye surgery.
Thanks to your support we were able to provide a grant to help offset the cost of her surgery.
Sometimes, a one-time grant can make all the difference—offering a lifeline that keeps a horse safe and well cared for.
DENTAL SURGERY
Tiny Tales Horse Rescue in British Columbia is devoted to rescuing miniature horses and ponies in need of care and compassion.
Thanks to your generous donations, Horse Rescue Fund was able to provide a grant to support Tiny Tales with a complex and costly equine dental surgery for Kaloni, one of their recent rescues.
Kaloni needed five teeth removed by a specialist, and her recovery was especially challenging due to the need for specific antibiotics.
CANADIAN DISASTER ANIMAL RESPONSE TEAM
Proceeds from our May 2023 BC based 50/50 cash jackpot raffle were gifted to CDART. We thank them for the phenomenal work they do.
SECOND CHANCE CHEEKYE RANCH
Proceeds from two of our British Columbia licensed cash jackpot raffles, one in March of 2023 and the other in April of 2023 were gifted to Second Chance Cheekye Ranch.
Since November of 2016 Second Chance Cheekye Ranch in Squamish, BC has rescued over 200 horses and rehomed over 160.
20 NEGLECTED HORSES
We were pleased – thanks to generous contributions by supporters – to be able to offer financial support for the care of 4 severely neglected horses relinquished by Stephanie Redlick into the care of a local family, before 16 other horses were thankfully seized by Ontario Provincial Animal Welfare Services (AWS).
Sadly one of the 4 had to be euthanized – and we are currently fundraising to provide specialist veterinary care for Xena, one of the 3 survivors. [Learn more…]
5 FREEDOMS RANCH 2022 – 2025
Founded 13 years ago 5 Freedoms Ranch Rescue and Rehabilitation Society, located in Strathcona County, Alberta, Canada currently has 90 horses, donkeys and mules in their care.
5 Freedoms takes in surrendered animals and volunteers directly with the City of Edmonton to care for seized livestock.
Horse Rescue Fund continues to support 5 Freedoms Ranch so they can continue the amazing work they do.
THE ALICE SANCTUARY 2022
Founded in 2014, The Alice Sanctuary is a vegan farm animal sanctuary that provides care and healing for over 200 rescued, surrendered and abandoned farm animals including horses.
Drawing from the resiliency and life-affirming presence of the animals who live at the sanctuary, the goal of The Alice Sanctuary is to empower, encourage, and inspire visitors to find the tools they need to go out and make a positive change in the world around them.
Proceeds from our September/October 2022 raffle were gifted to The Alice Sanctuary.
PHILOMENA EQUESTRIAN CENTER
We’ll be sharing more soon about this remarkable organization, founded by a husband-and-wife team of military veterans.
Their quiet but powerful contributions to their New Brunswick community—and beyond—are truly inspiring. From supporting fellow veterans and local food banks to helping school food programs and rescuing horses, their impact is wide-reaching.
We’re proud to support their work and hope to continue doing so through future grants.
BC WILDFIRES 2021
Yet again, the summer of 2021 was a catastrophic one for many horse & other animal owners.
In addition to locking arms with other organizations and individuals, and providing free, volunteer, 24 hour support, for two and a half months, to those having to evacuate with equines due to wildfires in British Columbia, Canada…
Since 2015 the individual board members of Horse Rescue Fund have provided countless hours and funds to help with everything from fuel for volunteers hauling horses, out of harm’s way, to hay and veterinary care for the period equines were evacuated.
Since 2020 #HRF has helped raise funds to pay for hay, boarding and vet care, for equines in distress and displaced during disasters across Canada.
DEVASTATING ACCIDENT
In a perfect world Horse Rescue Fund would always have the money needed on hand to help with cases like this one…
An accident left a family’s main bread winner in a wheelchair and resulted in a desperate need for help to feed their beloved 6 horses.
Help with purchasing hay for the winter was needed or the horses were to be dispersed to end up who knows where.
Thanks to YOUR generous contributions and sharing of this need, Horse Rescue Fund was able to purchase hay to feed these horses through the winter, which helped this family to be able to keep their beloved horses.
ROCKING HORSE SANCTUARY
For 23 years Dale Paulette Stone has been running Rocking Horse Ranch Animal Rescue and Sanctuary in Baddeck, Nova Scotia, Canada.
During those twenty-three years, 325 equines have come through the rescue’s doors.
In 2020 and then again in 2021 Covid19 restrictions eliminated in-person fund raising opportunities that for over 2 decades have been the backbone of Rocking Horse Ranch Rescue’s funding…
Thankfully Horse Rescue Fund’s generous donors came to the rescue with $4200 and hay for winter 2021/22 was secured.
BC FLOODS 2021
Just when we thought we could take a bit of a breather after a wildfire-filled summer, disaster struck again in British Columbia, Canada.
Unprecedented flooding — or the new normal? Either way, calls came in for help from horse owners in multiple parts of the province.
YOU rallied to help – and purchased hay to feed equines while displaced and in distress.
This is just one example of why we founded Horse Rescue Fund.
BEAR VALLEY 2021
Bear Valley Rescue was founded in 2004, registering federally as a charity in January of 2005 and provincially as a society in 2008.
A portion of the proceeds of our December 2021 50/50 Jackpot Cash Raffle was used by Horse Rescue Fund to buy hay for Bear Valley Rescue.
Again, this is just one example of how your contributions, your raffle ticket and t-shirt purchases are used to help equines in need.
Thank YOU for your support.
T-SHIRT SALES SUPPORT HORSE RESCUE FUND
Canadian actor, director, and animal advocate Kate Drummond has once again shown her heart for horses by supporting Horse Rescue Fund’s “Skip a Coffee. Feed a Horse” campaign — helping us provide emergency grants for horses in need across Canada.
You may recognize Kate from the long-running CBC series Heartland, her inspiring TEDx Talk “Chasing Dreams and Beginning Again” (with over 600,000 views), or her starring role in Crossroads Springs, now airing on Super Channel in Canada and on Great American Family and Prime Video in the U.S.
We’re grateful for Kate’s ongoing support of animal welfare — from her generous donations to her kindness in sharing our mission with her fans, including the passionate #earpers community from the TV series Wynonna Earp.
From everyone at Horse Rescue Fund, and from every horse whose life you’ve touched —thank you, Kate, for your compassion and continued support.😘
ECO & PLANT BASED PRODUCTS PROCEEDS SUPPORT HORSES IN DISTRESS
If you haven’t checked out this Canadian 🍁 company yet, here’s the scoop: they started with ultra-concentrated, eco-friendly laundry strips—pre-measured, hypoallergenic, and super simple. No clunky plastic bottles, no mess.
Skeptical? So were we—but these strips handled our barn clothes and saddle pads better than our old favorites, while still being gentle enough for hand washables and baby clothes.
And that’s just the beginning! There’s now a wide range of eco-friendly, plant based, never tested on animals — products, including an amazing toilet cleaner.
Best part? When you shop through our link, you pay the same price as anywhere else, and Horse Rescue Fund gets 20% of your purchase.
Every “coffee skipped” helps a horse get the care they deserve, and we simply couldn’t do it without you.
From all of us (and the horses), thank you from the bottom of our hearts for helping us say “yes” to as many equines in need – as we possibly can.
