Jan. 21 2022: I get a message from a lady saying her Husband was up in the helicopter and saw a pack of wolves eating something fairly big by Tubbs Lake.
To make sure it wasn’t my horses, we sent up a drone to check out the area.
After reviewing the footage at home we spotted two horses along a fence line that looked very veeeery similar to Jack and Jill.
Jan. 22 2022: 💜 THE DAY OF THE REUNION 💜
We went out there on horseback and a bit on foot as the snow was VERY deep and THERE THEY WERE!
It looked like they have been in that spot for a few days as there were lots of tracks and poop. They both lost weight but aren’t super skinny, they have lots of energy, didn’t seem tired at all.
As soon as I put them back Jill took her job back of bossing everyone around and Jack was happy to see his buddies.
Honestly it all still seems so unreal…
THEY ARE HOOOOOOME!!! 💜💜💜💜
Now what do I think happened…?
Right now I am just incredibly relieved and happy that I have them back home.
.I will share more in the next days after getting some emotional and physical rest.
IT’S EVERY HORSE OWNER’S NIGHTMARE
December 18, 2021 – 2 horses go missing, and are now presumed to have be the victims of horse thieves, in British Columbia, Canada. Details here.
It’s every horse owners nightmare but even more so in Canada and the USA because horses from both countries are routinely slaughtered for human consumption, including stolen horses.
With plants that slaughter horses in Alberta and Quebec, many of us in Canada and the norther part of the United States live within an easy 1 to 3 day drive of a slaughter plant in Canada.
With horse slaughter also common in Mexico horses in the southern USA are also an easy 1 to 3 day drive from a slaughter plant.
As horse owners, we could easily return home from work to find horses missing and with same day slaughter as drop off, our beloved horses could be slaughtered before we even knew they were missing.
Yes, you read that correctly. Horses in Canada may be slaughtered the same day they are dropped off.
To make matters worse the protocols to prove ownership in Canada at slaughter plants are based purely on the honour system, unless a horse has a brand and even that, is no guarantee.
Hard to believe right? But there have been many cases of stolen horses sold by those claiming to be the owner and slaughtered without the rightful owner knowing.
In this day and age, most horses are not branded but even if a horse does have a brand there is not any guarantee that the brand inspector at the slaughter plants is going to notice.
Many horse brands are barely visible in the summer, let alone in the winter when many horses have grown thick winter coats.
This honour system for selling horses to slaughter plant in Canada comes into play another way…
Those dropping off horses for slaughter are required to sign an EID (Equine Identification Document) stating that the horse or horses have not been treated with drugs that are not intended to enter the human food chain.
This “honour” system of trusting those who sell horses to slaughter plants is one of the reasons that horse meat within Canada is regularly re-called because of toxic chemicals.
